Given the choice between the two of you, I'd take the seasick crocodile
You also know that I now live in America, and that there are things about this country and the people who inhabit it that irritate me. That Americans, as a society, and as compared to Canadians, are loud, rude, and fat, for one. Or, rather, for three.
There are also things about this country that frighten me, and I'm not a person who's easily frightened. Second on the list of things that frighten me only to the fact that one can buy a gun at WalMart is the American desire to turn their murderers into celebrities.
But the fact that O.J. Simpson has written a book called If I Did It, and that a publisher was willing to publish it, and that bookstores may be willing to put it on their shelves, is something about America that deeply disturbs me.
It's more than disturbing. It is disgusting.
It is terribly, terribly frightening.
It makes me want to get on the next Air Canada flight to YYZ.
I implore you, Gentle American Reader, in the name of everything that is good and decent about your country: do not buy this book. Do not read the reviews of this book. Do not discuss this book in bars or around the water cooler.
Ignore it, and let it die the undignified, silent, unmourned, unrecognized, death it deserves.
Please.
Much to her surprise, Sass's plea is heard.
One year ago today, Postmodern Sass went sailing with her handsome neighbour, Boz.

Sass-
You should not be linking to the book on Amazon if you truly want to help stop people from buying it.
Unfortunately, America, as a society, has some serious problems... some of which are in the progress of being fixed, like the Republican domination of the government, and others are not, like the glorification of sociopaths.
Another problem in this country is the sheer love of litigation and the lack of personal accountability that has fostered it.

I debated that for some time; whether or not to link to the book. I finally decided that people might not believe this story without some proof. (Most of my readers are not in the U.S.) I thought it was a joke when I first heard it. A sketch on Saturday Night Live, or on Studio 60. There's no room for parody in this country; the real is too bizarre.
I'm 100% behind you. That a suit, in the industry that I need to publish my writing one day, decided that not only was this a good idea, but a marketable one frightens me to my very core. It is at this time I am very glad to be a Canadian. This is essentially OJ hypothesizing IF he did it. So we've got a book from a guy who is going to tell us exactly HOW he would have killed his wife. That is sick on a level I cannot describe. You're always welcome back in the Tdot should you need to come back. :)
True...in most countries this would not have happened. Only in America.
UGH... as much as I love this country, there is stuff here that is just unbelievable.
I'm with you, Postmodern Sass. I will not buy the book or read it. Will not watch the interview, either, but the buzz about all of this has been difficult to avoid. I am surely trying, though.
The fact that OJ is not behind bars not only baffles me still but frightens the heck out of me!
Sassafras;
The very premise of the book is vileness personified. Filth of the first order. Garbage.
But Orenthal James Simpson is protected by a law. It's a good law. And if it can protect a scumbag like him, it will protect you too.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
This is a great country, take it for all in all.
Give it a chance.

O.J. has a right to write the book. Of course he does. What's disgusting is that people in this country create a market for sensational filth like it.
There weren't enough intelligent television watchers in this country to keep Arrested Development alive, but there are enough disturbed morons to make a murderer rich. That's what disgusts and frightens me.
Hey Sass:
I completely agree. This book and everything about it is beyond disgusting. I was mortified when I heard about it. The unfortunate part is that even though most people will agree that the entire idea of such a book is horrific, human curiosity will prevail, and many will read it. I implore Sass's readers, do not partake of the garbage.

I refuse to discuss this book, the man or the special about it.
He's disgusting and I hope they're readying a place for him.
Dr. Sass,
I am surprised that this book is actually making it to the bookstores ! Does it really have any market ? Even considering the marketting hyperbole that is sure to be launched I guess ...
This case is often brought as a strong point over here, when discussing our judicial system w.r.t a jury based system ...
Strange that he could walk away free, even stranger that he has the audacity to go ahead and publish something like this !
Mridul: That the book has been published means the publisher, at least, believes there is a market for it. But books are published every month that wither and die for lack of interest. This is what I'm hoping, should sanity prevail in this country, will happen with O.J.'s book. I also anxiously await news of bookstores refusing to carry it.
